Refurbs for Spaceship Earth and Space Mountain in August/September

Jun 13th 2013 at 4:55

Spaceship Earth will be closing in August for a week, with Space Mountain closing three times in September for minor works.

Epcot's Spaceship earth will be closed from August 18 and will reopen on August 26, 2013.

Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain will see three short closures, these are:

  • September 3 - September 5, 2013
  • September 10 - September 12, 2013
  • September 23 - September 26, 2013.

Our own in-park source, as well as numerous other WDW news sources are reporting that the Space Mountain refurbishment is likely to be for adding new "Trim Brakes" along the track to either reduce load on the track (thus reducing wear) or speed (and g-force levels). The purpose of trim brakes is to simply reduce the speed that the ride cars operate at, rather than bringing it to a complete stop. A sensor is installed along the track from the brakes to detect the ride-car speed, which then relays a 'slow down' message to the brakes if needed. Disney already use these brakes across a number of their rides for safety reasons.
