MagicBands to be issued to all Pop Century guests from this week

Nov 13th 2013 at 8:36

Guests staying at the Pop Century Resort will be issued with a MagicBand upon check-in from this week instead of the usual 'Key to the World' card.

This will be the first time the new 'NextGen' MagicBand has been handed out to all resort guests on such a scale, and signals that the system is near completion and ready for broad use.

The new MagicBands contain an RFID chip along with other technologies, which will allow guests to touch the band on their room door to gain access. It will also allow guests to touch it on a pad at each park gate, to gain entry. They can also be used for the new FastPass+ system and for the new 'touch to pay' system.

Guests can still request a Key to the World card, however the magnetic strip will be deactivated, meaning it can not be used for the older standard FastPass machines.

We're expecting that following on from the Pop Century, we'll see the All Star Sports/Movies/Music resorts roll-out some time in January, followed by the rest of the resorts. Disney is likely load-testing the system to ensure that it can cope with large numbers of guests using it at the same time.
