It could be argued that Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort has the best theme out of all the Disney resorts. It's themed as an Africa-lodge style resort. As you enter the main lobby from outside, you immediately notice the grand scale of the lobby, with its solid wood beams and thatched roof. Real African artefacts are on display around the lobby. As you walk through this grand building, you arrive at a huge glass window, overlooking the resorts very own private Savannah, featuring Giraffe, Zebra and other fascinating wildlife. Guests can walk out to the end of a pathway that takes them into the middle of the main Savannah area, giving a fantastic panoramic view of the wildlife.
Each room is complimented with an african theme, featuring dark wooded furniture and colourful bed spreads. Each room typically has two double beds, or one double bed and bunk beds. A king-sized bed with a daybed is also available.
Each guest room has a private balcony. Most rooms overlook the savannah or the pool area.
Typical room facilities include:
The resort's swimming pool, the Uzima Pool is a 11,000 square-foot, zero-depth entry pool and includes a 67-foot long water slide. The pool is designed to look like an African watering hole (this used to work much better as the pool bottom was painted brown however during a refurbishment it was painted back to blue). This is a great pool to relax at. A kids pool is located close by in addition to a hot tub. Behind the pool there is a pink flamingo exhibit, and just behind that is the savannah. Multiple walkways take you around the savannah area from the pool.
Other recreation activities at the resort include:
The Disney bus service operates regularly from a bus station located to the side of the main lobby. Busses will take you to all Disney parks. The buses do also stop at Kidani Village.
You will be provided with a complete transportation map when you check in which gives you instructions on how to get to all the different areas on Disney property. To get to the different areas you'll just need to make sure you board the right bus. They display their destination clearly on top, however if you are unsure you can always ask the driver or a cast member.
The Disney bus transportation system is one of the easiest ways of getting around. Busses depart from the resort to all the parks regularly and are completely free to use at any time. The bus services generally stop running once the parks close, and tend to run for an hour either side of the park hours. During extra magic hours they will run slightly longer.
The resort features three restaurants:
Boma - Flavors of Africa is a table-service buffet restaurant offering a delicious selection of African cuisine inspired by the culinary culture of more than 50 countries. If you're staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge you'll most certainly want to visit Boma. The restaurant is open from 7:30AM to 9:30PM. Some of the items on the menu include authentic African soups, wood-roasted meats, fresh seafood, Durban-spiced roasted chicken and the restaurants signature drink, Frunch.
Jiko - The Cooking Place is a fine-dining table-service restaurant (this costs two table-service credits if on the dining plan) set in a beautifully themed restaurant with the colors of an African sunset. The restaurant features bold flavors of traditional African, Indian and Mediterranean cuisine, paired with an impressive selection of wines. Sample menu items include wild boar tenderloin, oak-grilled fillet mignon and grilled wiled gulf shrimp curry.
The Mara - a quick-service location offering the traditional Disney fair, with a few additions thrown in such as sandwiches, flatbreads, burgers and chicken. There are also a number of cold items offered in the cooler section, which can be taken away. These items include fruit bowls, salads, sandwiches and a selection of deserts and beverages. This is ideal for those sitting around the pool as The Mara is within a few steps.
